ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tampa Bay Lightning announced Wednesday the signing of men's hockey defenseman Alex Green to an NHL entry-level contract starting for the 2020-21 season.

Green established himself as a key contributor on a Cornell defensive unit that repeatedly proved to be among the country's elite over his time on East Hill. He was named the ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman for the 2019-20 season – a resurgent campaign in which he posted a plus-20 rating that tied for the lead among league blueliners. While also logging heavy minutes on the penalty kill, Green played a big role in Cornell's five-on-five dominance. In 22 league games, the Big Red yielded just 19 even-strength goals. He ranked second on the team with 35 blocked shots.

It has also served as a notable bounce-back season for Green, who was hampered by injuries during his sophomore season. He more than doubled his career point total as a junior, posting 16 points on seven goals and nine assists. He was on the ice for a team-leading 31 even-strength goals, which led the team.

"Congratulations to Alex. This is great for him, and we wish him nothing but success with Tampa Bay," said Mike Schafer '86, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey at Cornell.

The Lightning saw Green's potential after an impressive freshman season that saw him immediately installed into a top-four role on the blue line, primarily playing alongside Yanni Kaldis '20. That strong start in the collegiate ranks led to Tampa Bay's selection of Green's rights in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Green becomes the second member of his class to join an NHL organization after forward Morgan Barron signed with the New York Rangers over the summer.
